The morning of Dec 18, 2008 brought some low temperatures across the nation.
New Orleans and Las Vegas both got snow,
our local temperatures dropped to about 28 degrees
and stayed below freezing for about six hours.
This would normally do a lot of damage
to the tender Nopalea grande plants.
We turned the sprinklers on to apply water to the plants and help keep them from freezing.
This made for some fun icicles on the cactus leaves.

The plants (mostly) made it through just fine

I used photos I took in August of our corn,
cactus and oak trees,
I ran them through the kaleidoscope program
and used some of them in this screensaver.
There are thirteen photos in this screensaver.

I enjoy the vaguely Arabesque
and Native American style designs
made with the paint program.

Montana de Oro and Dinosaur Cove California

Montana de Oro means 'Golden Mountain'
It probably got the name from the Spanish when they went by on ship and saw the hills golden with mustard plant and poppies in bloom.

It is a rugged rocky coast,
with tan colored shale bluffs that run into the pounding surf.

The wind whips past the cliffs as the terns, gulls and pelicans ride the wind in search of the plentiful sea life, and the rare sheltered spot.

Both are jewels in the crown of the Central Coast of California, the 'Middle Kingdom' of the West Coast.

I made these images by using the 'kaleidoscope' effects in my paint program. I thought they came out pretty nice and might make a good screensaver. See what you think.

The original photos were taken at the Santa Monica Pier,
and Venice California
the photos included the usual tourist attractions....
rides, restaurants, pigeons....
as well as bushes, walls, signs and handrailings

Fourteen photos of the Sepulveda Basin Wetlands, one of the best examples I have seen of a wildlife refuge in the middle of a megalopolis. To me this seems a real success story of how mankind can have a blend of technology and modern living, and yet have open areas for wildlife and humans too. I spent a morning walking around the lake, and even though I was in the middle of a vast 'concrete jungle', I felt right at home in the wilds of this oasis of scenery, flora and fauna.

California does have some areas that get a lot of snow in the winter. We have some of the nation's best skiing within four hours of virtually any spot in the state.
But this winter we spent just hugging the coast. The moderating effects of the great ocean make for a very tranquil and moderate climate (usually).

These are the ponies of the Vikings, small enough to fit into a small boat with a Viking warrior and then strong enough to transport him overland on his hunt for booty and treasure.
There are eleven photos in this screensaver.

These were all taken at Short N' Sweet Ranch, of Templeton Calif. They specialize in Icelandic Ponies (lovingly referred to as Icys). They offer horses for sale as well as riding and training lessons.
They also operate a 'Dog Rescue' that specializes in small-breed dogs, you can see it at www.shortnsweetdogrescue.org
