Opuntia phaecantha, var. discata

Note the rose shape to this flower, grown in the sun, in Feb. 2000. Opuntia phaecantha.
Opuntia phaecantha, grown in shade.

This flower is from a plant grown in the shade of an oak tree. It does not particularly like the deep shade.

This plant has a rangy growth habit, it tends to run along the ground and sprawl over it, trying to root as it goes.
I really do appreciate this easy to care for plant, give it a few years and you will likely have a six foot wide area covered.
This particular plant has been only two years along this retainer wall, and already it is starting to run over the terrace, and hang down along it. It can be covered with a plethora of brilliant yellow flowers five inches across. It tends to bloom intermittently through summer.

Opuntia phaecantha: $5.00
The leaves used for cuttings tend to be about 8 inches long, and 5 inches wide
