Nopalea grande
Nopaleana cochinillifera

This is one of our best plants.
These are the ones we hold out as the epitome of great fresh cactus leaf eating.
These are highly productive leaves, but they are frost tender, sustaining damage at 32 degrees.
In the summer they like steady water for maximum production,
but they will put out 'a steady progression of leaves,
with extra heavy 'flushes' of fresh leaves every couple of months

Opuntia ficus-indica variety 'Lynnwood'

If you want a mix of fast growing, dark green,
upright leaves reaching for the sky, and some fairly spiny leaves for dinner,
this is a good plant for you.
This plant grows so fast it is likely to reach six feet tall in two years.
The fruit from this variety is very spiny, but the fruits are a deep reddish orange color, and are very tasty and sweet.
This variety also comes into fruit faster than the others we sell.

Each leaf will have some thin spines which scrape off easily with a kitchen knife, similar to scaling a fish. The leaves are in the classic 'cow tongue' shape, long pads ending in a rounded point, tasty leaves indeed.

Opuntia robusta 'spineless'

This Opuntia is called 'Robusta' for its huge robust size.
It has the nickname 'Dinner Plate'.
When we harvest these, the leaves are often nearly a foot wide, and three quarters of an inch thick.
They have a pretty waxy coating with a blue tint...
it is called 'glaucus' and is a way the plant helps protect itself from the hot dry summers.
This particular variety is called 'spineless', but it's not 100% so.
And it does have glochids still, so must be handled with caution,
we always wear thick dishwashing gloves when handling them.

Opuntia robusta 'spiny'

This Opuntia is related to the 'spineless' robusta above.
As with the other variety, the leaves are often nearly a foot wide, and three quarters of an inch thick.
These plants are spiny spiny spiny!
Don't plant these if you're gonna have kids running around... they are dangerous!
We can neither confirm nor deny that we sell these for security measures.
The only way to handle this type of leaf is with about twenty layers of newspaper sheets,
the thick mass will protect you pretty well from the terrible spines on this plant.
